Viruses intentionally added to our with food. -- Bacteriophage (bacteria eater)!!   Welcome to the new world of poor food management!

There is yet another "technological advance" to clean up of our food-borne illness problems.   A company called  "Intralytix" has received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the use of six bacteria-killing viruses also known as bacteriophages.  The initial product will kill Listeria,  a bacteria that can contaminate deli meats or cold cuts.  The next product in development will kill E. coli.  It all sounds good and great to rid our food of these offending bacteria.   But we need to look at the potential consequences of throwing more technology and money at our food system.   First of all, the FDA will not require any special labeling of foods treated with bacteriophages (same as how irradiated foods are not labeled).  Are you starting to feel a little out of the loop?  We should be free to choose the nature of the food that we are putting into our body.  What happens when we eat these bacteriophages?  There's no research into long-term effects of these products.   What happens when this is ingested, does the bacteriophage continue to destroy bacteria in your gut?  Will the virus mutate?    We know when something is consumed or killed there will be a waste product, what happens to this, will it be toxic?  Using this application to correct the safety of our food supply is like trying to put toothpaste back into the tube.   We're trying to fix it from the wrong end!  We need to look at why our food supply is contaminated and fix it at the source instead of throwing questionable technology at the problem after the fact.  Stay tuned...
